Smaart 7 has two distinct operating modes, Real-Time and Impulse Response (IR) mode. In real-time mode, Smaart performs real-time spectral transfer function (frequency response measurements). Impulse Response mode is designed specifically for measuring and analyzing large impulse response measurements, suitable for studying reflections and reverberant characteristics of rooms and other aspects of interactions between sound systems and their acoustical environments. The longer time constants, on-the-fly filtering and high-resolution frequency domain display capabilities available in IR mode also make it an excellent tool for studying loudspeaker response and timing characteristics.

Real-time frequency-domain analysis capabilities in Smaart 7 fall into into two main categories: Spectrum and Transfer Function. Of the two, new users will probably find Spectral measurements, particularly the real-time audio spectral analyzer (RTA Display) to be the most immediately familiar. The RTA display allows you to see the amount of energy present in various frequency ranges, typically fractional octave bands, across the audible spectrum at any given moment. Smaart’s real-time Spectrograph is similar to an RTA except that instead of displaying each measurement for only an instant before updating the display with new data, the spectrograph stacks up successive measurements to give you a view of the frequency content of the signal over some period of time. The Spectrograph has proven to be a particularly excellent tool for feedback hunting and has many other uses as well.
